In the prodn. of anhydrous alkali salts of 2-8C aliphatic carboxylic or halocarboxylic acids from the corresp. free (halo)carboxylic acids by reaction with alkali alcoholates, the reaction is not taken to the theoretical endpoint but is terminated at ca. 97-98% of this value, and the alcohol formed is completely removed by addn. of an inert solvent with simultaneous distn., before the isolation of the (halo)carboxylic acid alkali salt. (Halo)carboxylic acid alkali salts are useful as intermediates for organic and pharmaceutical prods. Many are themselves pharmaceutically active. The prods. are highly pure and consequently have improved stability; halocarboxylic acid alkali salts produced by the new process display no tendency to polycondens.
