The heat exchanger is built from tubes (2) which fit into holes formed in rows in plates (1). The holes are formed with a flange (3) with its edges (5) turned inwards to form a second smaller flange (7). Two diametrically opposite slots are cut in the rounded edge, (5) of the flanges (3, 7) which imparts a degree of resilience to these flanges. The plates are pushed over the tubes and pressed together so that the flange of one plate fits inside the flange of the adjacent plate. This axial pressure causes the inner flange (7) to be compressed onto the tube (2) to provide a sound joint with good thermal conduction.
