Surface coating, for porous powders or porous articles and fabrics with protective or decorative coatings, is applied by contacting the material (I) to be coated with a gas in the super-critical state as fluid medium, which contains the solid or liquid coating material (II) in soln. Used for coating a catalyst, esp. with an (un)satd. hydrocarbon, pref. a fat (deriv)., a polyalkane, polyalkylene or polyvinyl halide plastics or a coloured lacquer. It is esp. useful for providing protection for porous materials with a great internal surface area. Treated catalyst powder is free running and has good initiation characteristics.
