The parent specification describes a process for the prodn. of methane by anaerobic digestion of biodegradable liqs. in a fluidised bed of bacterial communities immobilised on particulate solids, the particle size of the solid being less than 90 micrometres and the superficial speed of the liq. being greater than 2.5 m/hr. The feature of the present invention is that the biodegradable liq. contains organic particles in non-colloidal suspension. The concn. of particles in the liq. is e.g. 0.1-5% and the size of the particles is e.g. up to 5 mm. or more. Process is useful for treating effluents from slaughterhouses, fruit preserving plants, sugar factories, etc., contg. organic material in non-colloidal suspension and opt. organic material in soln. or colloidal suspension.
