The stator punching blank is modified such that, when stacked into a complete core (2), part of each pole is reduced, at the tip, to give a wide and narrow (4, 3) part of the tip on each pole. Such a core is produced by designing the stator punching in a manner that allows simple reversal of the punching during stacking in order to produce the required pole tip arrangement. The extra effort in manufacture of the modified stator is thus very small. The pole tip design raises the maximum output for a give frame size. The application is typically to small synchronous motors as used in measuring or regulating circuits, which have a power output of about 50 watts maximum. The proposed design modification is intended to optimise run up and stable running characteristics, and also to reduce noise.
