A matrix printing process for alphanumeric characters, based upon a dot matrix of 'm' rows and 'n' columns is produced by a column printing head that moves along a line with actuation of the required number of points. Each column is printed with an additional number of points (p) added in, such that p is less than or equal to 'm'. The assignment of the additional points is made to provide a sequence of dots within the line of a character that may be maintained over a number of characters. In the case of the character E, K and B, a line sequence of 7, 3, 3, 3, 4 dots is provided if two points are added to 'E' and 2, 1, 1, 2 added to K.
