Engine exhaust pipe connection - has spigot in cup end with captive seal ring pressed from mineral filler in metal wire mesh

The sealed and resilient connection is esp. for a motor vehicle exhaust pipe. The pipe ends are resiliently (9, 10) connected via flanges (7;4, 8), of which one (7) has a spigot (2) received in a spherical cup-shaped recess (3) of the other (4, 8). A captive seal ring (6) is contained between the spigot and the cup. It consists of a filter e. g. of mineral fibres contained within a metal wire mesh material of which part of the wires is in a temperature, wear and corrosion-resistant steel whilst the remainder is in a corrosion-resistant low-friction metal. The ring is formed by pressing.
