New 1,2,4-triazole derivs. are cpds. of formula: R1X-CH2CH(Y)-CH2-AZ(I). In (I) R1 is H, 1-4 C alkyl, phenyl, or phenyl mono-, di- or trisubstd. by 1-6 C alkyl, cyclohexyl, 1-5 C alkoxy, halogen, CF3, OH, NO2 and/or phenoxy, the phenoxy gp. in turn opt. being mono-, di- or trisubstd. by 1-6C alkyl, cyclohexyl, 1-5C alkoxy, CF3, halogen, OH and/or NO2; X is O or S; or the residue R1X can also be Cl or 1,2,4-triazol-1-y1; Y is OH, halogen, 1-4 C alkoxy or -O-CO-NHR2 in which R2 is 1-5 C alkyl, phenyl or phenyl mono-, di- or trisubstd. by 1-6 C alkyl, cyclohexyl, 1-5 C alkoxy, CF3, halogen, OH and/or NO2; and Az is 1,2,4-triazol-1-y1 or 1.2.4-triazol-4-y1. (I) are fungicides active against e.g. Phytophthora infestans, puccinia triticina, Botrytiscinerea and, esp., true mildews (including benzimidazole-resistant mildews). (I) are also useful as wood preservatives, in paints, and as preservatives in e.g. lubricants for metal working.
