New builder for washing and cleaning agents comprises a mixt. of (a) 50-90 wt. % of =1 copolymer of 35-80 mol. % of (meth)acrylic acid and 20-65 mol. % of an acrylic acid hydroxyalkyl ester with 2-4C in the hydroxyalkyl gp., and/or alkali salts of this, and (b) 50-10 wt. % of =1 polymaleic acid with a mol. wt. of 200-1500. The mixt. of (a) and (b) gives a synergistic building action in washing and cleaning agents and provides good sequestering of Ca and Mg ion and good dirt suspension properties. Prods. are useful substitutes for phosphate builders.
