The machine tool, such as a power press, is provided with hinged guards (2) for the protection of the machine operator. The guards are shaped so that the press punch (3) moves only inside a totally enclosed space. The starting cycle of the machine and the movement of the guards are interlocked by means of mechanical, pneumatic or electrical elements. Thus press punch movement is only possible with the guards in their protective position. The guards (5) are provided with flexible cable connections (4) to enable attachments to be made or released without moving the guards prematurely.
