Welding of curved metal sheets to make shell-like structures etc. - where longitudinal edges of sheets are bent to form reinforcing beads which also locate weld metal
Welding of curved metal sheets to make shell-like structures etc. - where longitudinal edges of sheets are bent to form reinforcing beads which also locate weld metal
The invention can be used to make any shell-type structure e.g. motor vehicle bodies, self-supporting roof domes, transportable sheds, boat hulls, garages or hangars. At least some of the sheets are bent in the longitudinal direction and possess longitudinal edges bent for form a bead with a round cross-section. A bead on two adjacent sheets is used to form a seam filled with weld metal on one or both sides of the joint. The average radius of curvature of the beads is pref. 2-3 times the sheet thickness; and the joints may be partly or completely filled with weld metal. The beaded edges forming the seam can be held together by clamping pliers. The beaded edges of the sheets provide the welded prod. with high rigidity.
