Tools using cutters made of hard materials - where cutter is bonded to tool shank or carrier by powder metallurgy, esp via isostatic pressing of the shank

Each tool consists of a holder, carrier or shank (I) in which a cutter or cutters are embedded by powder metallurgy. The cutters are made of hard metal or a hard substance, and pref. have a shape which supports their location in the shank (I); and after sintering of the shank, the cutter is pref. supported by a permissible compressive stress. The entire carrier or shank (I) is pref. made of sintered steel, and is isostatically pressed in a die contg. the cutter and then sintered; or may be hot isostatically pressed to compact the shank and bond it to the cutter. A very simple method of bonding a cutter to its carrier (I).
