Induced swirl IC piston engine - has throttle valve and contoured vane in inlet duct to produce eccentric gas flow

The arrangement is intended for inducing a whirl in the gas flow entering the cylinder of an i.c. engine with a cylinder block (1), cylinder head (2) and inlet valve (8) for each cylinder. A throttle valve (17A) is arranged in each inlet duct (6) so that the gas flow is concentrated to one side of the duct. Between the throttle and the inlet valve, a contoured vane (30A) divides the duct into two flow passages (6a, b). One passage serves to maintain eccentric flow up to the inlet valve, thus producing a whirl in the gas after this has entered the cylinder.
