A device for applying specimens into a thin layer chromatography substrate consists of a thin support sheet or film with a depression in its upper surface and an appts. for dispacing this depression towards the plane of the upper surface of the sheet, in order to transfer the specimen onto a thin layer chromatography substrate adjacent the upper surface. Pref. a transfer layer or coating is used for preventing direct contact between the specimen together with its solvent vehicle and the upper face of the thin sheet. The initial speciment, together with its solvent vehicle is evaporated onto the transfer to form a small spot of specimen before the transfer operation is carried out. In this way the specimen is more concd. than when it is applied together with solvent onto the substrate, the solvent then being evaporated. The method provides a more concd. spot of specimen.
