Drying and sterilising protein contg. suspensions - in fluidised bed granulator with long residence time

Method of drying, and rendering hygienic, protein suspensions comprises introducing a suspension of pH 3-9 and solid content 5-60 wt. % into a conventional fluidised bed appts. ftted with a classifying outlet and inlet nozzle for the suspension. The solid granules in the fluidised bed are kept 60 degrees C and the residence time of the suspension is 1 min. Before drying, physiologically acceptable acids or bases can be added to the suspension to give the required pH. Used esp. for slurries contg. microorganisms (e.g. from biological processing of waste animal prods. or waste waters) for use in human or animal nutrition. Dust-free granules easy to handle and process are prepd. and the long residence times obviates the need for a separate treatment stage to make the prod. acceptable hygienically.
