Determination of antibiotic (I) levels in a medium comprises measuring the initial increase in adenosine levels of a test culture caused by metabolic changes induced by (I). Pref. the change in ATP concn. in the organism is measured by the firefly bioluminescence system. Patic. the method is used to measure gentamycin or other aminoglycoside or toxic antibiotics in sera or other body fluids, or to measure (I) contents of milk, meats, and other foods. Rapid, simple and quantitative method for measuring (I) concn. and for assessing sensitivity of moc microbes to (I) or for determining min. inhibitory concns. Only simple instrumentation is needed.
