The data transfer unit (10) is intended to allow, with the aid of a second identical but remote unit (11), information transfer between bidirectional buses, one local (12), the other remote (21), to which data processing devices (13 to 20) are coupled. A bidirectional and serial transfer channel is thus established between the buses. Each information transfer is accompanied by address information identifying the destination of the information and, in the case requiring a response, also by information on the address of the requesting device. The transfer unit (ISL-10) operates transparently to the information transfer between the local bus (12) and the remote bus (21) to which the remote data transfer unit (ISL-11) is linked. The unit comprises acquisition means, including a local bus interface and registers acquiring the information asynchronously on the local bus (12) during a first operating cycle, means for detecting, in the interface of the local bus information addressed to the data transfer unit or to a device coupled to the remote bus (21), means for address conversion coupled to the registers, which convert the addresses, as required, so that they correspond to the requirements of the remote bus (21), unidirectional interfaces for transmitting information to and receiving it from the remote transfer unit (11) and transferring it to the local bus (12) if required, and a logic control apparatus linking the various parts of the transfer unit.
