Flexible pressure roller has a fixed shaft carried at its ends by a pair of supports which can exert a predetermined radial pressure on the axis of the shaft. Shaft supports an external, hollow shaft which is journalled at its ends in self-aligning bearings. Located between the shafts is a sleeve which is mounted on the shaft in an axially and angularly constrained manner and supported rotatably by a further shaft by which it can be displaced radially relative to the shaft. The shaft is provided intermediate its length coincident with the sleeve with a chamber which is filled with an elastic fluid for acting on pistons mounted slidably in bores in the shaft. Pistons contact with the adjacent ends the inner wall of the sleeve. Operating means for variation of vol. of chamber are provided. Flexure of roller can be controlled in an easy manner to vary the configuration as required independently of the transmission of forces by the end supports of the fixed shafts.
