The semisold billet or slab leaving the mould travels through several pairs of guide rolls; and at least some of the rolls are located between the billet and one or more electromagnetic stirrers using two, three, or more phases. The stirrers are located symmetrically w.r.t. the plane of symmetry of the slab, and in positions so the voltages induced in the rolls by the magnetic field cancel each other and the currents flowing through the roll bearings are zero. When several stirrers are used, they are pref. fed with different voltages or currents to ensure mutual cancellation of the voltages in the rolls.
