The solar energy powered electricity generating plant uses semiconductor cells as energy converters. These are carried on, and from a balloon (30) or kite which lifts them into the upper atmosphere. An insulated cable carries the power to the user. The suspended cells are in substantially square panels hung by their corners from ropes running over rollers on a cruciform spreader to an angle adjusting unit under the gondola, also capable of horizontal rotation. A loop from the lowest panel carries a roller supporting the holding line (8) to which the cable is loosely shackled (6).
