In an aircraft having two engines (22) mounted forwardly of the wing and discharging jet exhaust over the wing for augmented lift, a trailing edge flap (34) is positioned directly behind each engine. Each flap has a stowed position for cruise, a rearwardly and downwardly extending position for maximum deflection of the jet exhaust downwardly for STOL operation, and intermediate positions. The upper surface (38) of each flap is curved with the radius of curvature increasing along the chord length from the forward knee (40) of the flap to the trailing edge (42). Each flap is moved from its stowed position, to its fully deployed position in a manner such that its upper surface forms a smooth and continuous extension of the fixed rear portion (60) of the wing upper surface Vortex generators (35) on the upper wing surfaces forward of flaps generate vortices in the jet exhaust that travels over the flap upper surfaces.
