The intermittent feed mechanism is for plate-shaped items. It includes a first conveyor indexing the items, stacked edgewise on to a track. Before the first conveyor (3) there is a second conveyor (5) operating independently of it, together with a lifting mechanism (6). It the top position, the lifting mechanism directs the items (2) delivered by the first conveyor above the second conveyor, and in the bottom position it is below the second conveyor.
