The equipment transmits or stores signals on a magnetic information carrier, e.g. sound track for narrow gauge film. A lever or slide is provided so that the user can set a single, adjustable voltage divider (17). The latter controls the effective levels of two signal transmission or recording potentials. The latter can be influenced alternatively or simultaneously for e.g. voice-over or musical background recording. Alteration of the partial resistances ratio of the divider (17) controls one or other of the effective levels. The other level is reduced, possibly to zero. The divider tap (18) is coupled to the common reference potential for the recording (4) and wiping (3) heads. The signal to be recorded is fed to the other terminal (19) of the divider (17).
