Methylene dithio-bis-amino propanoic acid - useful as a mucolytic agent and as a trophic agent for skin and hair

The use as medicaments of 3,3'-methylene dithio bis (2-aminopropanoic acid) of formula HOOC-CHNH2-CH2-S-CH2-CHNH2-COOH (I) and its salts and esters is new. (I) are used as mucolytic agents and as trophic agents for the skin and hair. (I) have low toxicity LD50 ==10 g/kg po (mouse). In animal tests the mucolytic dosage of (I) was found to be 500 mg/kg p.o. and this dosage had no effect on the behaviour of mice, did not interfere with the various reactions of the central nervous system, and did not effect the cardiovascular measurements of anaesthetised cats.
