Semi-continuous casting machine with heavy duty extractor - for the vertical casting of very large steel billets

Semicontinuous casting plant, using a mould mounted on a frame alongside a vertical guide pillar fitted with a wagon. On one side of the wagon is an arm with an extractor drawing the cast billet out of the mould when the wagon is driven don the pillar by an electric motor and redn. gearbox. The gearbox drives a vertical row of gears located in the pillar and meshing with toothed racks fitted on the wagon. the motor and gearbox are stationary and are located away from the high temp. zone; and a brake is fitted between the motor and gearbox to provide constant loading on the motor. The vertical row of gears(a) pref. includes alternate intermediate gears(b), so the pitch between the centres of gears(a) is 0.5-1 times the length of the toothed racks on the wagon. The wt. of wagon and extractor in the upper, starting position is pref. 1.05-1.5 times the mechanical force needed to extract the billet, which is =100 tonnes.
