17-Spiro furna steroids of formula (I) are new: In (I), R is CH3 or H; Z in 7 alpha position is H, 1-4C alkyl, or -SCOR1; R1 is 1-4C alkyl; the dotted line in ring A is an optional 1 (2) double bond when R is CH3; the dotted line in ring B is a double bond in position 6(7) when Z = H. Used for treatment of arterial hypertension and cardiac insufficiency. A typical product is (17R) spiro androsta-4,6-diene-17,2'-(3'H)furan 3,4' (5'H)dione, m. pt. 148 degrees C.
