Water is circulated by a pump (3) through solar energy collectors (2) and a storage tank (5). It is also circulated separately from the tank through a domestic or other heating system. A horizontal cylindrical drum (9) is supported within the tank (5) on rollers (12, 13). It contains an equilibrium mixture of the solid and liquid phases of a hydrated salt at the melting point of the salt. This serves as a thermal store which receives heat from and returns it to the circulating water.
