Earthing of ship during load transfer operation - employs equipotential cable powered by LF low power signal

Electrical sparking is avoided during loading or unloading operations of metallic container ships. An equipotential cable is connected between ship and jetty and is powered by a low frequency low power generator. A ship (1) close to landing jetty (2) is connected to shore equipment via supply pipe (4) with series of arms (5) coupled via isolating joints (6). An equipotential cable (8) connects ship to jetty and is powered by low frequency low power signal from generator (9) with earthing (12) at jetty end. Sensors (10) in toroidal detector (11) enable open circuit to be detected via supply pipe and to operate relays in warming circuits.
