Fume extn. plant for steelworks converter - with efficient fume extn. when converter is being charged

Above the steelworks converter is a hood formed by two skirts (a, b). Skirt (a) has a annular shape with a large central hole, and is raised or lowered by a hoist; in the hole is a fixed, coaxial skirt (b) surrounding the main fume suction duct. Skirt (b) is connected to a sec. suction duct employed to remove fumes escaping from the converter when the latter is tilted for charging with molten iron or scrap. In its lower position, skirt (b) forms a roof on the enclosed area surrounding the converter. Seals are used on both edges of skirt(a) to make a gas tight joints. Fume extn. and access to the converter nose are both improved when the converter is tilted into its charging position.
