A solid iron product is obtd. from iron oxide by crushing the oxide, compacting the particles and simultaneously reducing and sintering the compact. The product may be forged or re-pressed to increase its density or produce the required shape. Compared with the prior process of reducing the oxide to sponge iron before crushing, the present process gives a reduction in processing time (the oxide can be crushed in 30 sec. compared with 10-15 mins. for sponge iron). Additionally, a smaller press (1 t/cm2 compared with 5-8 t/cm2 for sponge iron particles) can be used, and coalescent of the iron particles during redn. leads to a higher density being obtd. during sintering.
