Zinc oxide varistor with alternating voltage stability - contains barium oxide and boron oxide and is useful for surge arresters

Zn oxide varistor compsn. contains 0.01-0.10 (0.10) mole-% BaO and 0.01-0.01 (0.01) mole-% B2O3 to produce good alternating voltage stability, partic. in the 400-600 degrees C range. The variator is produced by pressing and sintering the compsn. and heating for =1 hr. at 400-800 degrees C to impart stability in alternating voltage operation. These varistors are used in lightning arrestors and spark gaps to protect electrical equipment from overloads. They have a low initial wattage loss and long-term stability.
