Production of ortho- and para-monoalkylated phenols and 2,4-and 2,6-dialkylphenols from phenolic compounds, with good yields. /P P The phenolic compound is reacted with an aldehyde having from 1 to 10 carbon atoms and a secondary aliphatic amine having a basic dissociation constant less than about 3.6 at 25 degrees C.
