A platform (2) is raised or lowered by a scissors type linkage (3, 4). The lower ends of the links (3) are pivoted at a fixed point (9) to the base (1) whilst the upper ends carry rollers (7) which run in guides (8) in the platforms (2). The links (4) are attached in a similar manner with rollers (7) running in guides (11) in the base (1). An electric motor with a speed reduction gear is installed in a tube (22) which forms a common pivot for the links (3)(4). This motor rotates the links (3) relative to the links (4) and so raises or lowers the platform (2), the upper level remaining parallel with the base by virtue of the parallel arrangement.
