Prepn. of organic polysulphides comprises reacting excess octoatomic sulphur (I) with an organometallic cpd. (II), the organic gp. of which is that required for the polysulphide. Reaction is pref. effected in a liq. which dissolves both (I) and (II). Pref. the metal of (II) is Na, K or (esp.) Li and the organic gp. is an alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or alkaryl gp. or a polymeric gp., pref. a polyvinyl gps. esp. polystyrl. Prods. are useful in coating comspns. etc.
