The dishwashing machine allows the interior of the machine to be supplied with fresh water or with soft water from the water softener, or with a mixt. of the two, in accordance with the selected washing, rinsing and drying programme. The interior is only supplied with soft water on its own for the final rinsing, while during initial washing and intermediate rinsing it is filled for a controlled time interval with fresh water and then topped-up to the required level for the selected programme with soft water. Pref. the fresh water and soft water mixt. for washing is controlled to provide an overall water hardness of 8 deg. dH. The water softener can be regenerated via a salt soln., with the use of soft water alone, only for final rinsing, so that this regeneration is required less frequently.
