A protective shell for use in a bullet-proof waist coat or vest comprises firstly a layer of hard armour plate on the outside, then several superimposed layers of synthetic fibre fabric having a high resistance to traction, and lastly a shock-absorbing layer in the form of a cushion of continuous synthetic filament having many set crimps which confer greatly elasticity without trapping air between them. A wide range of synthetic fibre types may be used. In an example, 'Kevlar 29' (RTM) fibres are used for the fabric layers, and a wadding material of 'Dynalba' (RTM) for the shock-absorbing cushion. the armour plating may comprise a very hard steel covered with a thin layer of zinc.
