Process comprises addn. of a gas rich in CO2, with recycling of the pptd. CaCO3 sludge into the water before introducing the CO2 gas. Process is carried out in an appts. comprising a water feed area at the base at the centre of a decantation zone, lower part of which is a zone for forming the sludge/water dispersion with means to pass the dispersion to an area with means for CO2 gas injection. Process is used for examples for treating water contg. colloidal organic material with lime to absorb it in the CaCO3. It avoids incrustation and the appts. is suitable for both operations.
