Plastic models and toys - of expanded polystyrene made abrasion resistant by expanded polyethylene foil coating

Models or toys are made of plastic by using a core of expanded polystyrene of the desired shape. Foil of polyethylene with closed cells is expanded under a nitrogen atmos.. Before use this foil is contacted by a hot plate to soften it so that it can be applied to the core or wrapped around it. Expanded polystyrene has a low abrasion resistance and this detracts from its usefulness for toys. Spray painting is not satisfactory and heat-shrinkage polyethylene foil causes deformations which is unacceptable for model aircraft.
