Machines esp. pumps, for use in offshore environments, e.g. in conjunction with oil drilling installations, are made of Ti or Ni alloys, with the contact surfaces of the moving parts being provided with coatings having a low coefft. of friction and forming no galvanic couple with the Ti or Ni friction and forming alloys in the presence of seawater. The coating is pref. tungsten carbide or, in the case of the bore of a barrel, a mixt. of tungsten carbide and chromium oxide. The coatings are pref. applied by plasma spraying, esp. to the bore of a pump barrel and to the piston reciprocating in the barrel. The pumps have a longer working life than conventional stainless steel pumps.
