PURPOSE:To prevent lowering of the thermal efficiency of a gas water heater, by controlling the exhaust gas discharging rate according to the temperature of a pipe for feeding hot water used for room heating, by increasing the combustion gas discharging rate after opening a damer or otherwise by closing the damper after decreasing the combustion gas discharging rate. CONSTITUTION:A temperature detecting means 10 is provided at a portion a pipe 4b for feeding hot water used for room heating. The temperature detecting means 10 is connected to a proportional control valve 3 of a burner 2 and to a solenoid valve 34 of a damper 8. Here, arrangement is such that the combustion gas discharging rate is controlled on the temperature of the pipe 4b. That is, in case of increasing the combustion gas discharging rate of the burner 2, it is increased after opening the damper 8. On the other hand, in case of decreasing the combustion gas discharging rate, the damper 8 is closed after decreasing the combustion gas discharging rate. With such an arrangement, it is enabled to eliminate too lean combustion of burner 2 and hence to prevent lowering of the thermal efficiency.
