PURPOSE:To facilitate the input operation by setting the center of a pointer indicating characters or the like in a character panel at the most stable position in the squares of the panel in the character input device for transmitting signals according to changes in the coordinate. CONSTITUTION:Characters 24 or the like are contained in each square of the character panel 23. Tracks 1 and 2 comprising blight and dark stripes, light sources 7 and 8 and photoelectric sections 9 and 10 are arranged sideways at the upper portion in lateral direction and endwise to the left in vertical direction and a pointer 25 is provided in linkage with photoelectric converting sections 9 and 10. The center 26 of the pointer aligns a light spot on the tracks 1 and 2. The tracks 1 and 2 are so arranged that the extension of the boundary lines 31 of the square reaches the center in the stage 1 (32) of voltage waveforms 27 and 28 and 29 and 30 as obtained when photoelectric change sections 9 and 10 move. As long as the center 26 of the pointer 25 varies in the position within the range of the area surrounded by four broken lines 33, no up or down count pulse will be generated. This facilitates the alignment of the pointer 25, namely, the inputting operation.
