PURPOSE:To activate rhodium complex catalyst, by contacting catalytic soln., contg. rhodium complex, tertiary phosphine, and high boiling by-product, and separated from other products and solvent with basic substances. CONSTITUTION:When produced aldehyde and solvent are removed by distillation from a reaction soln. formed by the hydroformylation of a olefin in the presence of rhodium complex catalyst having tetriary phosphine as a ligand, a catalytic soln. remains, which contains rhodium complex, tertiary phosphine, and high boiling by- product. When the catalytic soln. is allowed to contact with an aqueous soln. of basic substance such as sodium hydroxide, ammonia, etc., the activity of the rhodium complex is recovered. Because the catalyst is activated simply, the consumption of expensive rhodium is reduced.
