Optical recording materials for recording information encoded in a high-energy density beam of radiaton at a wavelength of about 488 nm are disclosed. The materials comprise a support having coated thereon a layer of an amorphous composition having an absorption factor of at least 20 litres per gram-centimetre at said wavelength, the layer comprising a binder and a dye which conforms to the structural formula: IMAGE wherein: each R independently represents a substituted or unsubstituted straight- or branched-chain alky group having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, each R' independently is a hydrogen atom or a substituent which does not adversely affect the chromophore, and n is 0 or an integer from 1 to 5, provided that when n is 0, either the two carbon atoms attached to the carbonyl group are joined by a single bond or each of the two carbon atoms bears a hydrogen atom.
