Digital data is recorded as luminance level in synchronism with the colour subcarrier signal in one horizontal line period adjacent a constant (black) luminance line within the vertical banking interval between adjacent fields of video information on a video disc. The arrangement facilitates separation of the digital information by generating a difference signal between the data line and the black line using the comb filter already provided in the system. The digital data represents field number and type of program content and is used by a microprocessor controller to provide player features such as locked groove detection, program elapsed time display, and end of program indication.
