An improved process for the production of sodium, calcium or lithium metal salts of phenol sulphonic acid formaldehyde polymer for use as an oil-well cement additive comprising the steps of (1) sulphonation of phenol with sulphuric acid, (2) cooling the reaction product and diluting the same with water (3) extracting the reaction mass with benzone to recover unreacted amount of phenol, (4) polymerizing the phenol free sulphonated reaction product with formaldehyde and (5) neutralizing the resultant polymer formed with corresponding metal hydroxide, wherein the improvement comprises in directly polymerizing the reaction product of step (1), by adding dilute formaldehide solution drop wise thereto at 95 degree -100 degree Celsius for 6 to 10 hours and then cooling and diluting the reaction product to room temperature, separating the polymer formed, by adding the reaction product in a thin stream in water, as bottom layer and neutralizing the acid free polymer formed with corresponding metal hydroxide to obtain the desired salt for use as oil-well cement additive.
