A process for the preparation of an active substance having medicinal properties from plants belonging to the Melastomataceae family which comprises extracting plants belonging to the Melastomataceae family with a solvent such as herein described, separating the extract in a known manner such as herein described concentrating the extract is a known manner such as herein described and purifying the extract in a known manner such as herein described.
