The machine produces two identical composite chenille yarns, each comprising two binding yarns, or core yarns, twisted together, and locking between them segments of cut effect yarn. The machine may vary the width of the chenille effect in cycles, yielding two identical yarns of varying diameter. A blade is provided with alternating movement, so that its horizontal cutting edge emerges from a slot and cuts the spirals of chenille at various stages of winding on to the profiled winding element. A composite chenille yarn of varying thickness or diameter is achieved. The effect yarn may be contrasting colours along its length, to vary its appearance further.
