Chenille yarn is produced on a machine having a core yarn supply and a supply of effect yarns. Machine comprises a working head where the effect yarns are wound in spirals around a winding element or gauge. A circular blade may be adapted for cyclic approach and withdrawal to cut the effect yarn spirals intermittently, producing segments of normal cut chenille, and segments of looped uncut chenille in the same composite yarn. Machine, which may have more than one working head, may provide yarns of uncut chenille, yarns of cut chenille, or a fancy yarn with segments of cut and uncut chenille, according to the manner of engaging the circular blade.
