A porous diaphragm for an electrolytic cell comprises a non-conducting support fabric impregnated with a non-fibrilic active component (I) contg. silica. The fabric has on one side a non-continuous coating of an electroconductive metal, viz. nickel, gold, silver or a platinum gp. metal, or an alloy or mixture thereof. A cell for the electrolysis of alkali metal chloride brines has foraminous metal anodes and cathodes; the diaphragm covers the cathodes. The diaphragm is physically and chemically stable and provides reduced cell voltage, permitting the cell to produce an alkali metal hydroxide at economically viable current efficiency.
