Electrochemical generator for producing electric current comprises negative and positive electrodes and an electrolyte comprising at least in part, a solid soln. of an ionic cpd. which is completely dissolved in a macromolecular plastics material. Ionic cpd. has formula M+X- where M is an alkali metal or ammonium and X is the anion of a strong acid. The plastics comprises (partly) homo and/or copolymers having noncrosslinked chain derived from monomers having an heteroatom, pref. O or N, which can form donor-acceptor bonds with M+. Generator is rechargeable and can operate at lower temps., pref. 100, esp. 60 degrees C with all the components remaining in the solid state during operation. Modifications of vol. can be more easily compensated and risks of contact break between electrodes and electrolyte more reduced than in known generators. The generator can be used in various fields e.g. in the microelectronic industry such as batteries for pacemakers, and in power plants for storing energy during peak hours.
